Income here is taxable income. Held 12 months or more, the CGT discount comes off the gain first. The tax includes the Medicare levy and the low income tax offset; the Medicare levy surcharge isn't included.
The 12-month rule and the 50% CGT discount
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a CGT event. The gain is added to your taxable income and taxed at resident rates: nothing up to A$18,200, 45% at the top. Bought on January 15, 2026, a coin sold from January 16, 2027 has been held 12 months, so 50% of the gain comes off first. The 2% Medicare levy applies on top: nothing up to A$28,011 of taxable income, then 10% of the excess until the full levy is reached. The low income tax offset, A$700 up to A$37,500 of taxable income and tapering above it, comes off the income tax.
The formula
gain = what you sold for β what you paid (fees added to the cost and taken off the proceeds)
held 12 months or more: 50% of the gain comes off before it is taxed
income tax = resident tax on (income + taxed gain) β resident tax on income, each after the low income tax offset
plus the Medicare levy the gain adds: 2% of taxable income, nothing up to A$28,011, 10% of the excess just above it
Questions
How is crypto taxed in Australia?
As a capital gain added to your taxable income and taxed at your marginal rate, plus the Medicare levy. Held 12 months or more, the 50% CGT discount comes off the gain first. On A$90,000 of taxable income, a A$10,000.00 gain costs A$3,200.00 sold within 12 months and A$1,600.00 after (2026-27).
When does the CGT discount apply to crypto?
Once you have held the coin at least 12 months, not counting the day you bought it or the day you sold it. Bought on January 15, 2026, it gets the 50% discount if sold from January 16, 2027.
Does the Medicare levy apply to crypto gains?
Yes. The gain is part of your taxable income, so the 2% Medicare levy applies to it. Up to A$28,011 of taxable income no levy is due, and just above that it phases in at 10% of the excess. The low income tax offset, up to A$700, reduces the income tax but not the levy.
Can I offset crypto losses in Australia?
Against capital gains only, not against salary or other income. Losses come off your gains before the 50% discount, and what is left carries forward to later years.
Is this tax advice?
No. It estimates the tax on one sale. It leaves out state and local tax, other gains and losses in the same year, and your other deductions and credits. Check your figures with a tax professional before you file.
