How each jurisdiction taxes crypto gains
United States
Short-term gains taxed as ordinary income; long-term gains (held over 1 year) taxed at 0/15/20% federal rates.
United Kingdom
Capital Gains Tax after a £3,000 annual exempt amount, at 18% or 24% depending on your income band.
Germany
Tax-free if held over 1 year. Otherwise taxed at your income tax rate if gains exceed a €1,000 yearly threshold.
India
Flat 30% tax plus 4% cess on any gain, regardless of holding period. No loss offsetting allowed.
Australia
50% CGT discount if held over 12 months, then added to income and taxed at marginal rates plus the Medicare Levy.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is my estimated tax calculated?
We take your proceeds minus cost basis to find the capital gain, then apply the selected jurisdiction's rules — holding-period treatment, tax-free allowances, and marginal or flat rates — stacked on top of the other annual income you enter.
Why only these five jurisdictions?
US, UK, Germany, India, and Australia all have clear, published crypto capital-gains rules that can be reliably encoded as a formula. Many other countries either lack clear guidance or hinge on facts-and-circumstances (like whether trading counts as a business), which a simple calculator can't answer.
Why does the holding period matter?
The US, Germany, and Australia all tax assets held longer than a year (12 months for Australia) more favorably — Germany even makes long-held crypto tax-free. The UK and India don't distinguish by holding period.
Is this tax advice?
No. This is an educational estimate that doesn't account for state/local taxes, other gains or losses in the same tax year, specific cost-basis elections, or your complete financial situation. Always consult a licensed tax professional before filing.
What if I made a loss?
This calculator shows $0 estimated tax on a loss. It doesn't model offsetting a loss against other gains or income — real tax treatment of losses varies by jurisdiction and is best confirmed with a professional.
